A recent survey finds that phototherapy is often underused by US dermatologists:

“This is despite increasing evidence that these therapies are effective for a number of disorders", he said. "Narrowband UVB, for example, is proving at least as effective as PUVA for psoriasis. And unlike PUVA, it doesn't require psoralens, is inexpensive, has no gastrointestinal side effects, and can be used in children and pregnant women."

“Narrowband UVB is also superior to broadband UVB for psoriasis because it leads to faster clearance of lesions, fewer episodes of excess erythema, and longer remissions,” he said, adding that PUVA and broadband UVB remain options for treatment. “Other indications for narrowband UVB, based on reports in the literature, include atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, actinic prurigo, erythropoietic porphyria, pityriasis lichenoides, and prevention of polymorphic light eruption,” he added.
